Expert Advice: Wearing Metallic

Chelsea Lankford shows us how to add metallic hues to our wardrobe.

In our new series, top style bloggers show us their favorite ways to wear Timberland gear. Chelsea Lankford of TrueLane.Co shows us how she wears the Beckwith Lace-Up Chukka Boots.

Going Dark

Adding a touch of metallic to your wardrobe instantly dresses up your outfits.

These boots are a classic pair of leather boots, but the metallic sheen and design make them pretty special. These Women’s Beckwith Lace-Up Chukka Boots have rich, burnished leather which adds depth and visual interest to a casual-chic get-up for a rainy day. I kept the top of my first look city-sleek in basic black and white stripes and my favorite black trench, letting the boots make a statement. Metallic is a trend best worn in small amounts; it’s easier to appreciate a flash of silver here or a swipe of gold there rather than overload the look in layers of shine.

Another tip for keeping the trend in check is to pair metallics with neutrals.

Staying Warm

For my second look, I layered muted ivory and cream tones with a camel-colored bag to stay in the same brown and beige family as the gold-flecked boots. Pairing lighter tones with the deep, warm tones of the shoes provides great contrast without being too loud.

Adding Accessories

Sticking to accessories is my last tip for wearing metallics the right way. If adding some shine to your shoes isn’t your thing, try a handbag in matte silver or bronze, or a scarf accented with metallic threads.

Heading into the colder months of the year, I tend to fall into a pattern of piling on whatever is easy and warm in my closet … this year, I’m making it a point to mix-things up with metallics.
